Microsoft sponsors race to Linux

There is, of course, a kind of hidden agenda here, namely a Microsoft plug-in for Visual Studio dubbed Grasshopper which they figure will be in the hands of the winners before the race starts.

Grasshopper

That's a headline I never expected to write. And perhaps should not have.

But it's true. The Code Project, a group of Microsoft Visual Studio .Net developers, plans to hand out three XBoxes (natch) to those who can port specific ASP .Net applications to Linux fastest. Update: The only software company that is an official sponsor of this is Mainsoft. There is no official Microsoft sponsorship here.

The first race is Monday, and they're expecting these to go quickly. They want you to register with them, get a "bib number," and be ready to roll at 8 AM Pacific Time on three race days.

There is, of course, a kind of hidden agenda here, namely a Microsoft plug-in for Visual Studio dubbed Grasshopper which they figure will be in the hands of the winners before the race starts. Contestants can also port directly to Mono, write it in PHP, or use a Macromedia product, but I'm guessing that Grasshopper will get you there fastest.

Call it the cynic in me.

Good luck.
