Microsoft warns of Java exploit rise

Microsoft reports an unprecedented wave of attackes to exploit vulnerabilities in Oracle's Jave software in the last nine months.

There has been a rapid expansion in the amount of malware that attempts to exploit Java code, according to Microsoft.

In the second quarter of 2010, Microsoft Malware Protection Center had detected under half a million exploits with its antimalware technology, from virtually zero a year before. Between Q2 2010 and the middle of Q3, that figure had increased to over six million.

"By the beginning of this year, the number of Java exploits (and by that I mean attacks on vulnerable Java code, not attacks using JavaScript) had well surpassed the total number of Adobe-related exploits we monitored," said Microsoft researcher Holly Stewart in a blog post.
