in brief Westpac customers were hit by a snag in their bank's electronic payment network this morning that prevented them from making purchases on debit transactions.

Westpac confirmed to ZDNet Australia that in the early hours of the morning, a telecommunications networking issue saw debit transaction capability go down. The minor outage saw some Westpac customers experiencing difficulty in accessing other banks' ATMs, while others had some difficulty making purchases at non-Westpac merchants.

Customers were still able to process transactions by selecting credit on an EFTPOS terminal, or by using credit cards.

The issue was rectified before 9am, Westpac said.
