Motorola to announce Mac notebook at Comdex

Steve Jobs may just have created his first real competition for the Mac. Look for the announcement of a Motorola-designed PowerBook (portable Mac) for launch at November's Comdex show, following Apple's takeover of its number one licence-holder, Power Computing.

The design has been on the drawing board for months, and the only reason Motorola has not gone ahead with the production, has been a desire to keep Apple sweet. Now, however, Apple has gone sour. Within 24 hours of the announcement of the takeover, a memo circulated inside Motorola Computer Group from a senior vice-president; "What shall we call our PowerBook clone?"
