Microsoft profit in the fiscal quarter ended September 30 rose 23 per cent to $614 million from $499 million for the year earlier quarter in which Windows 95 was launched. Revenues for the quarter increased 14 per cent to $2.3 billion.

Microsoft said strong sales of Windows NT and SQL Server had helped achieve the increase.

The better than expected financials followed in the footsteps of similarly impressive numbers from Intel last week, suggesting the so-called 'Wintel' juggernaut is not slowing.
