NetApp's SteelStore, Cloud ONTAP move to AWS

NetApp continues to run with the hybrid cloud theme as it adds more products to AWS.

NetApp on Wednesday said that its SteelStore appliance and Cloud ONTAP storage operating system will be available on Amazon Web Services.

The storage vendor has increasingly partnered with both AWS and Microsoft's Azure cloud services as it aims to bridge the on-premise data center with public computing resources. NetApp is also aiming to be seen as the independent storage vendor to connect enterprises to the cloud.

NetApp rolled out its Cloud ONTAP operating system a few weeks ago. For the storage vendor, Cloud ONTAP is a way to transition into more of a platform over a hardware vendor. Cloud ONTAP is available today.

As for SteelStore, the backup appliance will enable archiving and recovery of business data to AWS. NetApp recently purchased the SteelStore product line from Riverbed . Riverbed had already offered SteelStore on AWS.

NetApp said that its Cloud ONTAP will be available as two Amazon Machine Images (AMIs)---explore and standard options---and a six-month subscription. AWS is the first cloud provider to run ONTAP.

SteelStore will be available in three AMI options with general availability in NetApp's fiscal 2015 third quarter.
