Networks '97: Cisco shows Gigabit routing

Cisco Systems gave visitors to the Networks '97 show in Birmingham this week the world's first ever preview of its 12000 Gigabit Switch Router (GSR) technology.

GSR will provide up to 60Gb/sec for Internet and large WAN and intranet backbones. In contrast, Cisco's 7500 model current generation of Internet routers max out at 155Mb/sec. The new routers will support ATM, Gigabit Ethernet and other advanced interfaces. Target customers for GSR products include ISPs and enterprises-level applications.

"Our 7500 routers meet the needs of Internet routing today, whereas the 12000 is designed to meet the needs of the future," said Lance McCallum, senior product manager for GSR products. "The 12000 will ensure the Internet will be able to meet the demands placed upon it for years to come."

Cisco also said it plans to improve the 7500 family by quadrupling route processing.
