New and updated S60 apps include Friend View social application and RoadSync 4.0

I keep going back to placing my AT&T SIM into the Nokia E71 because it is such a powerful and slick smartphone. I keep going back to placing my AT&T SIM into the Nokia E71 because it is such a powerful and slick smartphone. In the last couple of days a few new and updated applications were released for S60 that I just added myself and wanted to share with you all. A new social application from Nokia, updated RoadSync Exchange client with HTML email support, a new piece of integration with Ovi appeared, and a powerful Office suite was updated.

I read Rafe's note on All About Symbian regarding the new Nokia Friend View application. This new social networking application is available for S60 3rd Edition devices and there is also a web browser-based component that allows you to share your location and status with friends. It is similar to Twitter and other social networking apps, but is highly optimized for automatic location sharing. It is not integrated with Twitter or other social apps so you have to setup new friends, but it is quick and easy to install and start using. You can toggle on and off your location sharing too so if you do not want to share your location then it isn't required. It has a cool UI that so far is enjoyable to use, but there is definitely room for continued improvement that I am sure we will see coming.

While Nokia's Mail For Exchange client is available for free, I find the DataViz RoadSync client to be more functional and with the latest 4.0 version it now takes the clear lead over the Mail For Exchange client. The most significant improvement is HTML email support and after trying it out for a day emails look fantastic on my E71 now. Other improvements in version 4.0 include:

  • HTML E-mail
  • Tasks
  • Contact Photos
  • Pop-up Notifications for New E-mail
  • Keypad Shortcuts
  • Support for S60 3rd Edition FP2 Devices

You can check out screenshots of the new features and give the updated software a try yourself. Darla Mack noted that Flixwagon is now able to integrate with Ovi. Flixwagon is a streaming video application and as I try to move to a consolidated Ovi experience on my S60 devices it is great to see the integration appear. Now when you launch Flixwagon and shoot live streaming video you can have it appear automatically on your Ovi site.

Lastly, I received a note that Mobile Systems OfficeSuite has been updated to version 5.0 with support for Office 2007 file formats and more. OfficeSuite lets you create, edit, and view Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files on your S60 device. It has been quite a while since I last looked at OfficeSuite and I plan to check it out in more detail again soon. In looking at the details on their site, you can see that OfficeSuite supports chart creation and editing which I haven't seen supported in other Office applications.
