Domain name registry New.net has hired John Labbett as chief financial officer, a newly created position. A company representative said the appointment is effective immediately. Labbett was most recently a co-founder of Millennium Technical Group, an audience measurement start-up, and previously served as executive vice president and CFO of Egghead.com.

New.net, started by investor Bill Gross and his Idealab incubator, lets Internet service providers and individuals run software that allows access to unconventional Web addresses. The Sherman Oaks, Calif.-based company recently released a new domain suffix, .movie, aimed at replacing cumbersome addresses for official movie sites. --Julie Laing, Special to ZDNet News
