News Burst: BT launches WAP service, claims 1st
BT and Orange in a row over who was first to offer WAP in the UK
The first fully operational commercial WAP service was delivered by BT Cellnet Friday, backed up by 36 tailor made services and the promise of a network upgrade to the faster GPRS service, at a price, by summer.
Cellnet subscribers using the BT Cellnet Internet Phone service can now use Nokia's 7110 to surf the growing number of WAP enabled sites and, unlike a similar service launched by Orange in September, there is no 'walled garden' of content. Clearly exploiting Orange's dissadvantage, BT claimed it was the first UK mobile operator to offer fully operational WAP service.
