News Burst: EMI issues writ against phone tunes Web site

Record company is not amused that back catalogue hits have been converted to ringing tones
Written by Graeme Wearden, Contributor

EMI Music Publishing is suing a Web site that lets users downloads popular tunes as ringing tones for their mobile phones.

The site, yourmobile.com, offers hundreds of songs, and EMI claims it owns the copyright on 300 of the tunes. It is seeking $150,000 for each song, which includes Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit and Imagine by John Lennon.

Yourmobile.com has now removed the offending downloads, although the site is currently offline, and is understood to be seeking a settlement with EMI.
