The report is the first to come out of the US working group on electronic commerce and highlights five key issues vital to the successful development of e-commerce. These are infrastructure, consumer protection, developing country access to the Internet, understanding the impact of the digital economy and facilitating small and mediumn sized enterprise (SME) use of the Internet.
Mandelson saw the report as evidence of the "emerging international consensus on e-commerce". It is anticipated that the digital envoy -- announced by Mandelson last week -- will take a leading role in promoting e-commerce issues in the UK. No appointment has yet been made.
