News Burst: Massive storage technology to be showcased

Will we soon be fitting 10GB on something the size of a credit card?

US-based Constellation 3D will release details Monday of its fluorescent multi-layer disk (FMD) technology which the company claims will result in DVD-sized disks capable of holding 100GB of data.

FMD uses optical storage techniques allowing data to be stored on multiple layers within each disk. Each layer can hold 4.7GB, compared to a double-sided DVD that can only record 4.7GB on each side.

Constellation 3D believes the technology will be used in personal video recorders and third-generation mobile phones, as well as in credit-card sized devices capable of storing 10GB.
