News Burst: Michael Dell defends the PC, slams McNealy

Michael Dell told the European IT Forum in Paris this morning that broadband would boost the demand for more powerful PCs, easing fears of a slowdown in sales with the advent of non-PC Net capable devices.

Rubbishing the views of Sun CEO Scott McNealy, due to address the conference tomorrow, Dell said "he's introducing the Network computer again... he does so every couple of years or so, this is the latest introduction of the Network computer."

But Dell warned against banking on broadband without preparing properly for all of its implications. "If your information isn't ready for broadband, and it doesn't provide a compelling experience with video and sound, with user interaction that is exciting and alive, they are going to go somewhere else very quickly."
