News Burst: Sotheby's goes online

Amazon gets highbrow with leading auction house
Written by Justin Pearse, Contributor

Auction house Sotheby's has partnered with Amazon.com to launch an online auction site.

Sothebys.amazon.com, launched Friday, will feature items in over 100 collecting categories. Each lot is checked for authenticity and condition, either by Sotheby's or by one of the 4,500 worldwide dealers selected by the company.

Users will be able to search for particular items or browse by category. A Special Sales page will give details of upcoming auction events. Each item will be accompanied by detailed photographs, condition reports and item histories.

One of the first items to be auctioned at the site will be Austin Powers' Shagmobile. The psychedelic Beetle is estimated at $30,000-$50,000.
