Nokia N95-3 (North American model) firmware update version 20.2.011 is now available

I know that Ricky Cadden from the Symbian-Guru.com site has been waiting very anxiously for the Nokia N95-3 (North American version) to be upgraded to version 20.2.xxx and Nokia stated that the update would be coming in June. According to users on Howard Forums Nokia was able to release the update sooner than planned and it became available via the Nokia Software Updater (NSU) yesterday. Late last night I updated my Nokia N95-3 to the new firmware and it went smoothly.

So, what does this version 20.2.011 update bring to you that should compel you to upgrade? Here is a list of the updates:

  • Flash Lite 3 support (lets you view YouTube in the browser without another application)
  • Faster bootup
  • Faster camera load time (hopefully along the lines of the N82 response)
  • Integrated Search on Standby screen
  • Demand paging (this is a big one that helps manage memory)
  • Web Run Time (support for Widgets)
  • Overall performance improvements throughout the device
  • N-Gage demos (not a big deal since you can get N-Gage on it anyway)

Compared to the firmware on the Nokia N82 I am evaluating, the N95-3 doesn't get automatic screen rotation (ASR) that some people love and others hate (this can be added via a 3rd party utility though) and it doesn't come with Nokia Maps 2.0 (1.2 is included so you have to upgrade yourself).

I now want to see the next version of Symbian upgrade the basic email application and PIM suite and then I would be more compelled to use S60 as my primary device.

My big chore is to now reinstall the 45 applications I had on my N95-3 since a firmware update like this is where I like to start out fresh again and make sure everything works. You may be wondering what applications I load on my device so here is the list:

Gmail, Yahoo Go 3, Opera Mini 4.1, WorldMate, Windows Live Messenger, Slifter, Boingo, Joikuspot, Nokia Web Server, Bible Reader, Jaiku, ThreadSMS, Nokia Conversation, Cool SMS+, Truphone, Teams, fring, Twibble, Skype, Gizmo, Palringo, Nokia Maps, Nokia Sports Tracker, Earthcomber, Google Maps, extGPS, Location Finder, Shozu, Qik, Flixwagon, SlingPlayer, Mystrands, emTube, Ovi Share Online, Seesmic, QuickOffice, Papyrus, MobiReader, Calcium, Screenshot, N-Gage, Frozen Bubble, LightSabre, Mail for Exchange, and RoadSync.

What other applications do you recommend I try on my device?
