NOOKColor gets version 1.1 update, app store not included

The NOOKColor is an excellent ebook reader and sort of Android tablet. There is a version 1.1 update available that adds pinch and zoom in the browser and fixes lots of bugs.

Even though I returned my own NOOKColor (see my review) to use a Samsung Galaxy Tab instead, I still think it is an excellent ebook reader and have recommended it to several folks who were not looking for a full Android tablet. We know that an app store of some sort will eventually come in an update, but the update released today does not include this major feature. Instead, it adds some cool functionality and provides lots of tweaks and bug fixes.

According to the Barnes and Noble support site, this is what you will find in the NOOKColor 1.1 update:

  • Improved performance of Wi-Fi connectivity, Home and Shop.
  • Ability to pinch and zoom in browser.
  • Enhanced reading experience for magazines and children's books.
  • Access helpful NOOKcolor related information and support tips on the new default browser home page.
  • Reduce mistyped passwords with "show password" option during registration and Wi-Fi set up.
  • Easily identify NOOK kids Read To Me™ books with a new text banner next to the titles in Shop.
  • General bug fixes and performance improvements.

The version 1.1 update will roll out automatically to customers over the next few days.when connected to WiFi, but if you do not want to wait then you can download the sideloader and follow the instructions to update it manually right now.
