New Zealand's largest electricity generator Meridian Energy has joined the list of organisations looking for a new chief information officer.

State-owned Meridian supplies around 200,000 residential and business customers in New Zealand with energy and lays claim to being the only provider to sell certified carbon-neutral electricity.

The utility today advertised for a chief information officer in Australian media, saying it was looking for an executive to lead its "expanding IT function". The new CIO will report to Meridian's chief financial officer Paul Smart and be based in Wellington.

"By developing a leading customer-focused culture within IT service to end users and business owners within Meridian, you'll provide the highest standards of performance in services offered as well as reduce costs and help enhance the long term growth of the organisation," the advertisement stated.

The utility is looking for a CIO with the ability to manage large contracts, and with a strong analytical and financial management background.

A spokesperson from Meridian was not immediately available to comment on whether the company previously had a CIO.
