The Office of Fair Trading has asked small businesses for their opinions about the online barriers they face.
The OFT launched a consultation on Wednesday to ask SMEs about their experiences trading online. Small businesses should send comments to onlinemarkets at oft.gsi.gov.uk.
The consultation was launched in tandem with a report commissioned by the OFT called 'Online markets: discussion paper'. The paper is meant as a starting point for discussion, said OFT.
The paper finds the general health of online trading to be good, with online markets described as a "large and growing opportunity" for small businesses. For example, SMEs can now set up a web presence quickly and cheaply, said the report.
However, OFT warned that over-reliance on large providers such as Google and PayPal could cause problems.
"Some SMEs are currently dependent on particular providers and would be strongly affected by any 'system changes' or loss of service," said the paper.
