Although the Japanese imaging giant's Camedia C-1400-L All-In-One SLR digital camera is not a mainstream product, it is already ruffling rivals' feathers; Olympus stock rose sharply in Tokyo yesterday after the product announcement.

As well as the high resolution the £1,300 + VAT list device offers an integral 3x zoom lens and stores images on tiny 2Mb or 4Mb SmartMedia stamp-sized Flash memory cards that are the thickness of thin card. Olympus will shortly offer a unique floppy disk accessory that can house the cards so that any PC with a floppy drive will be able to read the images without a cable needed.

"We're aiming to be the number one in digital cameras and this sounds a warning to the opposition," said Graeme Chapman, European marketing director.
