Following the debut of the “world’s smallest” 1080p camera module earlier this year, OmniVision has another big release: a "top-of-the-line" VGA camera sensor intended for similarly high-end ultra-slim notebooks.

Labeled with the code name OV7727, the 1/13-inch sensor utilizes OmniBSI backside illumination technology and a serial peripheral interface, which is handy for touchscreen applications and supporting multiple cameras. Some of the image processing functions include auto exposure and white balance control, as well as correcting pixel defects.

The OV7727 produces scaled to full-frame 8-bit/10-bit images in RAW RGB format and "video conference-quality" recordings at 1300 mV/lux-sec in low-light settings. All of this is intended to work for LCDs on laptops in the sub-2mm range.

The latest OmniVision camera sensor is currently in sample-mode only, but it should go into mass production next month.
