OmniVision is quite proud lately, as they have just announced the release of the "world's smallest" 1080p, high-definition camera module.
The OV2720 is a 1/6-inch HD CMOS image sensor, able to deliver a native 1080p resolution. With the integration of their signature 1.4 micron OmniBSI backside illumination technology, the OV2720 can be used to record HD video from computing devices, mainly laptop and netbook webcams. That same OmniBSI technology should also help deliver double the quality in low-light settings than that of similarly-sized VGA sensors.
The title of the "world's smallest 1080p HD camera solution" recently belonged to Samsung's S5K6A1 CMOS sensor. The difference? The Samsung sensor had a z-height of 4.5mm, while the OV2720 measures in at 3.5mm. Snap.
While currently on a sample run for "tier-one" customers at the moment, OmniVision will put the OV2720 into mass production mode in June.
