One Year Ago: S3 promises to put film-like video on PC screens
This story first published June 10, 1997
S3 is planning to make a dramatic breakthrough by announcing plans for a graphics processor that will bring cinema-like quality to PC monitors.
On a visit to London today, S3 CEO and president Gary Johnson detailed plans to incorporate Faroudja Laboratories' Picture Plus video technology in cards that will be generally available in add-in cards next year.
Johnson said he expects the technology to quickly migrate to the mainstream and be especially attractive on consumer PCs with DVD-ROM drives.
Under the terms of the agreement S3 gets access to Faroudja's technology for integrating TV and PC formats, maintaining colour depth and recovering detail.
