Singapore Telecommunications-owned company Optus has announced plans to shift 6,500 employees to new headquarters to the western Sydney suburb of North Ryde.

Optus' chief executive, Paul O'Sullivan said the shift to the new headquarters -- comprising six separate buildings with 84,000 square metres of office space at 1 Lyons Park Road, North Ryde -- would allow the company to consolidate operations presently spread across North Sydney, Chatswood and Gordon.

The facility has, the company said, expansion capacity for an additional 500 jobs over the next three years.

"Optus intends to invest up to AU$150 million to fit-out the new facilities," O'Sullivan said in a prepared statement. "Once the relocation is complete, there will be significant operating cost savings through rental costs -- up to AU$20 million per annum lower than existing premises".

Work on the site will kick off in the first quarter of 2005.
