Optus edges into mobile security market

Optus is targeting small and medium businesses (SMBs) that are worried about mobile data theft and malware by teaming up with F-Secure to release OfficeApps Mobile Security product.

Using the OfficeApps portal, or another mobile phone, SMBs will be able to lock, wipe and reset the password of compatible business devices it has covered under Optus' Mobile Security Plan. Additionally, the devices can be tracked and the business notified when an alternate SIM card is used.

In addition to the anti-theft features, Mobile Security has anti-malware capabilities, including browser protection and a real-time antivirus scanner.

The product is currently available only for SMBs on a 12-month contract at $5 per mobile device. Two months of the plan will be provided for free. Compatible operating systems are Android, Symbian and Windows Mobile. Apple's iOS is not listed as a compatible mobile operating system.

SMBs will also be provided with support during business hours between Monday and Saturday.

The support may be a selling point for businesses, considering there are free or comparable anti-theft and anti-malware products in the market, but without support in many cases.

Optus SMB managing director Rohan Ganeson said: "SMBs now have access to many powerful and user-friendly security tools already being used by bigger businesses, but at a lower cost and without the hassle of IT set-up and maintenance."
