In two weeks at its Oracle OpenWorld user conference, Oracle (orcl) is set to unveil Release 3 of its 8i database, which is set to ship before the end of October. Instead of staggering the release dates, with the mainframe version following its Unix ones, Oracle is releasing all of the 8i updates simultaneously, according to officials. The mainframe update will feature technology that will allow customers to achieve greater than 31-bit addressing, using new Oracle patent-pending multi-address-space technology that Oracle is calling Operating System Dependent Interface (OSDI). The mainframe release of 8i R3 also will include a Java server feature, Oracle said. Oracle declined to comment on any of the other features in 8i R3. -- Mary Jo Foley, ZDNet News
