Palm just posted their Q1 FY09 results on their investor relations site and they continue to experience challenges in the mobile space. TreoCentral has a post comparing the numbers from last quarter and they show that the loss was less and the revenue more this quarter so there is a slight positive sign there. Palm is hosting a conference call on the results and will probably talk about the continued success of the Centro and the newly released Treo 800w that should be coming soon to Verizon.
Palm president, Ed Colligan, is quoted in the press release as saying,
I'm pleased with our momentum as we work to re-establish Palm as the leading innovator in the smartphone marketplace. While we're still in the midst of our transformation and have challenges ahead, we are bringing outstanding new products to market, hiring world-class talent and preparing to launch a new platform that will usher in a new era at Palm.
I personally was quite impressed with the Palm Treo Pro and will be getting one soon. However, with the unlocked only U.S. release of this device at a significant cost to the customer I don't know if this device will have much impact on the next earning report. Palm seemed to be focusing a lot on 2009 with their upcoming Linux OS devices and as a fan of Palm since 1997 I sure do hope we actually see something outstanding from them. The track record for the "next Palm operating system" has not been good so I am not holding my breath for its release just yet.
