Palm will lead European handheld market into 2000 - IDC

The Palm operating system will continue to dominate the European hand-held computer market for at least the next 12 to 18 months, according to a report to be released by IDC in the next few days.

The report, Western European Hand Held Devices Review and Forecast for 1998-2000, claims that since 1998 the Palm OS has had a 40% share of the market, followed by Psion with Windows in third place.

Alison Mackenzie, analyst and author of the report, says, "We believe that the Palm OS will be dominant for the next 12 to 18 months but, as more vendors come into the market, their market share will decrease."

Last month, at a conference in Denver, Colorado, Microsoft claimed , the Windows CE operating system was outselling Palm by as much as three to one.
