The deal gives the Antofagasta Minerals division of mining company Minera Los Pelambres the option to acquire a 30 percent stake in the project.
Located about 250 miles (400 km) north of Chile's capital, Santiago, the project is expected to produce enough energy to power 45,000 homes each year. Siemens will provide 2.3-megawatt wind turbines; Skanska will manage construction.
The project will begin construction in 2012 and come online in the second half of 2013. Chile has set a goal to generate 20 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2020.
