Pentium II to rev up to 400MHz
The Pentium II will fly faster than expected but the Pentium Pro is heading for a desktop exit.
Intel yesterday showed a 233MHz Pentium II but said it will also release a 400MHz version of the chip. All Pentium II CPUs will ship in a cartridge package; initial shipments are in early May. Early benchmarking of Pentium II systems suggest the chip will replace AMD's K6 as the fastest CPU for Windows 95 and Windows NT environments.
In the near-term at least, the Pentium Pro will live on as the processor of choice for servers.
