"I am delighted to announce the launch of NextDC and bring to the market my vision of building Australia's smartest, most secured, scalable and energy efficient datacentres," said Slattery in a statement.

NextDC has begun the acquisition of building sites in Melbourne and Brisbane. Each facility will initially provide at least 2000 square metres of technical space, with the plan to expand each to 5000-10,000 square metres in the future.

"I believe there has been no better time to invest in premium datacentres than now. With the unprecedented growth in internet traffic, data consumption and storage throughout the world combined with the incredible demand for power and cooling, legacy datacentres cannot cope with the requirements nor deliver the energy efficiency benefits that a purpose-built greenfield datacentre can," said Slattery, adding that industry analysts are continuing to forecast strong demand for specialist datacentres.

Slattery is optimistic about the company and believes it will "revolutionise" the Australian datacentre market.

He told ZDNet Australia that he will continue to be the chief of Pipe Networks for the next 10 months, but will then depart the company and take a more involved role with NextDC. He is currently in a director and investor capacity with NextDC.

Pipe networks was sold to TPG in March. Slattery today confirmed that the transaction was "running smoothly".
