PMC promises more room for 4G scaling with new backhaul processor

The semiconductor company is aiming to solve network bottlenecks caused by more and more 4G LTE deployments.

There are no shortage of surveys and studies these days about pending (or even existing) clogs for 4G networks as connected devices proliferate worldwide .

PMC is aiming to solve such bottlenecks with the debut of WinPath4, touted by its maker to be the industry's "first" backhaul processor that should enable mobile network operators to better scale capacity.

The fabless semiconductor company cited that as more LTE networks are deployed, mobile providers are also cutting out the radio node controllers used by 3G networks. However, this requires a significant migration and transition to Layer 3 packets and IP network topology.

Thus, PMC boasted that WinPath4 features a programmable Carrier Ethernet Router-on-Chip architecture that should enable carriers to deploy new platforms and networks while in transition.

This architecture is also designed to offer mobile OEMs with the ability to respond more quickly to evolving network requirements while building standards-based technology for small-cell, microwave, Packet Transport Networks (PTN) and Carrier Ethernet Search/Router (CESR) platforms.

In the end, PMC's WinPath4 should be able to extend single chip capacity up to 40G PTN backhaul transport rates.
