Written by Jane Wakefield, Contributor

The long-awaited cyber crime unit moves a step closer Tuesday as the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and the Home Office approve the plan.

As previously reported on ZDNet News, the unit -- dedicated to solving computer and Internet crimes ranging from paedophile activities, software piracy, money laundering and virus-spreading -- will be led by police intelligence organisation NCIS (National Criminal Intelligence Service).

The high tech crime unit, as it is expected to be called, will draw on expertise from other agencies according to an NCIS spokeswoman. No date has yet been set for launch and funding is currently under discussion.
