PopCap, Wooga pull titles from Google+

Both game developers taking games off Google+ platform, citing insufficient users and decision to redeploy resources elsewhere as reasons, according to report.

Two major online game developers announce they will pull out game titles from the Google+ platform, just less than a year after Google's social network launched its online game service.

Tech news blog All Things Digital reported Thursday that Wooga and PopCap had confirmed they will remove their game titles from Google's social networking platform. Electronic Arts' (EA) PopCap, for one, said on its Web site that Bejeweled Blitz will be discontinued on Google+ from Jun. 18, while apologizing for the "disappointing news".

German company Wooga had also taken down one of its games and other titles will follow suit, the report added.

The withdrawal of games from these popular game developers is another stumbling block for Google+, which has yet to attract enough users to its game platform amid competition from its main rival Facebook, it noted. Electronic Arts and Wooga are the third- and fourth- largest social game companies on Facebook, respectively, the report stated.

According to All Things Digital, a Wooga customer care representative said the company "decided to remove certain games from Google+ because we have a much larger following on Facebook and they are active users". A spokesperson from PopCap also said while Google is a "valuable gaming partner for PopCap and EA" and they would continue to develop for the search giant's platforms, both games companies decided "to redeploy our resources to other adaptations of Bejeweled".

In a separate Wall Street Journal report on Thursday, a Google spokesperson said games will "continue to be an important part of the Google+ platform".

Google+, which was launched in June 2011, began offering a number of online games to users last August.
