SYDNEY (ZDNet Australia)--Primus Telecom has axed 128 staff from its 800-strong Australian workforce on the back of the telecommunications downturn.

Primus has laid off 35 permanent staff and 93 temporary call centre operators.

“Consolidating several business units has meant an unfortunate but very minor reduction in Primus’ workforce,” Primus corporate affairs national manager George Hazim said.

The decision comes shortly after Primus announced plans to take over One.Tel’s unfinished mobile phone network, which analysts estimate to be worth A$600 million.

The company says it is scaling back its call cards and domain registration business in favour of its core voice, Internet and data business.
