According to a report in Friday's Wall Street Journal, the American government will ask a federal court to split Microsoft into two separate companies.
The report suggests that the Justice Department and most of the 19 states involved in the case were expected to file the joint proposal with Judge Jackson late Thursday. According to the WSJ, they will ask for what it terms, 'The most significant breakup of a major corporation since 1984 when the Bell System monopoly was broken into eight companies.'
The report goes on to suggest that if the breakup proposal was accepted, it could take a year or more to action because of appeals.
