The extended wireless coverage will give vocational students access to internet in additional indoor and outdoor locations in the university's city and Brunswick campuses.

The network also includes off-campus access points like the Melbourne Central food court, the State Library and several cafes near the city campus.

According to the university's acting ITS director Bernard Broom, the update primarily involved the roll-out of extra hardware.

Broom told ZDNet Australia that the bulk of the installation was done by Melbourne-based network specialist called Menco Electrical. The expansion comprises primarily of internal and external broadcast points and "a lot" of cabling.

"Menco did most of the labour; most of the money from the grant was capital that went onto the hardware," said Broom.
