Not content with reminding me that I haven't won an OBE, the world rudely points out that I never managed to finish any of those novels by letting Sid Smith win the Whitbread Best New Novel prize for Something Like A House. It's a top read, if somewhat heavy on the buffalo, but f you were one of those happy band of pilgrims in the early 80s who had a modem, chances are you read his stuff back then, He did news for online home computer magazine Micronet alongside the young editorial assistant Goodwins. But the genial yet serious visage on the book cover, while accurately conveying the genial Islington inhabitant the man now is, would be barely recognisable to the Sid of then.

He wore sandals. And octagonal rimless glasses. And cardigans. And... hey, there are pictures. But I am not the sort of man to publish them. Not yet, anyway.

Sid, you have my public key.
