S3 pumps up 3D chips

3D graphics chip market leader S3 has pushed out two additions to its ViRGE accelerator line aimed at mainstream video cards and motherboards.

The new chips are the EDO RAM ViRGE/DX and ViRGE/GX, which supports EDO RAM, synchronous DRAM (SDRAM) and synchronous graphics RAM (SGRAM). Both provide perspective correction and trilinear MIP-mapped texturing without affecting system performance, according to the company. However, only up to 4Mb RAM configurations are supported.

The California-based firm has shipped three million ViRGE 3D chips so far, giving it 70 per cent of 3D market, according to Dataquest market research. Diamond, Compaq, Dell, Toshiba and Hewlett-Packard are among current licensees.
