Samsung to buy AST

Samsung is to buy stricken US PC maker AST.

The Korean company already owns 49 percent of California's AST and has offered to pay $469 million for the remainder as well as pick up almost the same amount in debt.

Despite being a maker of several key components including memory, monitors and hard drives, Samsung has never built up a significant PC business of its own although it has achieved some small success in notebook PCs.
