Japanese electronics giant Sharp is hoping to make an impact in the personal digital assistant (PDA) market in the US with the release of its handheld Zaurus product.

Sharp hopes to distinguish itself in the market by including an MP3 player and a 64Mb memory card for storing MPEG video files. The handheld also includes a small keyboard. Elsewhere, Talkingbooks.org and Webgenerics are to offer children's books that can be downloaded from the internet onto an MP3 player. The encrypted digital books can only be used on trusted MP3 players so no illegal copies can be made.
