The Sharper Image, of all companies, has just entered the e-book reader ring with a very big release planned for the Literati.

Although the name sounds like an medieval secret society, the device is quite modern and sleek. The Literati hosts a 7-inch color display (800 x 480 resolution), Wi-Fi, and Kobo's reading apps for synching pages with other devices. Buyers will also get a free case and 150 titles pre-loaded upon purchase.

With a $159 price tag, that it puts the Literati nearly on par with the $149 Nook Wi-Fi. Except the Nook has a capacitive touchscreen, whereas the Literati does not. Still, with a low enough price tag (especially for The Sharper Image considering how much its gadgets usually cost), the Literati could have a decent chance when it hits more than 7,000 stores this October.
