Simple approach to printing less

So, admit it, you print info off Internet sites or your e-mail just because sometimes you need to have some sort of tangible version of the stuff you’re reading. I’m on a plane right now writing this, and if I didn’t have my paper notes, I would be pretty unproductive.

So, admit it, you print info off Internet sites or your e-mail just because sometimes you need to have some sort of tangible version of the stuff you’re reading. I’m on a plane right now writing this, and if I didn’t have my paper notes, I would be pretty unproductive.

I’ll bet, though, at least half of those pages are wasted paper. How many times have you printed an email in order to get the first two pages, but wound up with eight or so more of the conversation thread that you didn’t need?

That’s the problem that GreenPrint Software seeks to address with its GreenPrint product, and actually has been fighting to solve for roughly five years. Here’s the proposition, the software (which works on both Windows and Macs) can reduce between 17 percent and 20 percent of the overall print volume that is created by your company.

“We insert ourselves at the front end of the print job, preview the job and get rid of the stuff you don’t want,” says Kent Dunn, vice president of sales for the Portland, Ore.-based company.

Dunn says GreenPrint has been deployed in Portland (where it will ultimately be used on 5,500 PCs), as well as some other cities around the country.  The company is targeting pretty much everyone, though, from smalls business to public sector accounts.

The price for the software is between $35 and $50 per PC, depending on the volume being purchased.  The home edition is $29.
