Following a Twitter storm of 'Is Skype down?' messages, ZDNet UK tests show that the Skype client is crashing after about a minute of attempting to connect.

Skype has admitted there's a problem, with Skype's Social Media Communications Manager Peter Parkes on the Heartbeat support blog saying "A small number of you may have problems signing in to Skype. We're investigating the cause, and hope to have more details to share soon.".

UPDATE: Parkes has said that a resolution is in sight: "A configuration problem has meant that some of you have been disconnected from Skype. We've identified the cause of the problem, and have begun to address it. If you've been affected, you should start to see improvement in the next hour or so. You shouldn't need to manually sign back in to Skype - it should reconnect automatically when it's able to do so."

UPDATE x2: Although Skype now says that the situation is 'improving', signs are good that it may have been fixed. ZDNet UK's Skype service is restored, and others are reporting around the world that things are back to normal, as of 15:35 BST.
