Slack, a workplace communication platform, has gained an incredible amount of attention and fervor from its growing user base in the last several months.
But the latest update to the cloud-based service reflects one of the more waggish Internet fads in recent memory than tools for fostering collaboration and productivity.
That would be emoji.
According to the Slack team, users have been asking for some sort of equivalent to Facebook's "Like" feature to show support on messages and news feeds.
Emoji became the answer with more than 300 icons designed to reflect emotions in miniscule image form.
Arguably, many of these could be quite useful in promoting positive support, feedback and overall culture within a team or company at large.
For example, Slack suggested using emoji for expressing support, weighing in on projects through a simple thumbs up or down, and indicating when a project is completed through a check mark.
Found under a revamped Reactions tab, emoji will be rolling out to all Slack users throughout the course of the day.
The ubiquity of emoji across apps and social networks could be reaching a saturation point for those not as inclined to rely on the icons for communication.
Nevertheless, emoji certainly wouldn't be the first example of a consumer craze seeping into business and enterprise tech -- and it won't be the last.
Emoji might be the first of many new additions and upgrades coming to the Google Ventures-backed startup following the appointment of a new head of product last month.
The San Francisco-based company announced in June it hired Google and Twitter vet April Underwood to oversee Slack API integrations and developer relations, among other platform-related products.
Slack boasted at the time that it has surpassed more than 1.1 million daily active users and over 300,000 paying customers.
