SlingPlayer for iPhone will be able to be streamed over AT&T 3G network

This is music to my ears: AT&T is opening up to Sling Media and allowing streaming of their SlingPlayer app for the Apple iPhone (and iPod Touch) over the 3G network.

I might be breaking down and paying the $30 for that upgrade app now.

Given that it was just recently that Apple and AT&T lifted the VoIP ban from the 3G network, this is definitely another milestone in what iPhone users can stream over their beloved smartphones. (Is AT&T trying to be as generous as possible in fear of losing their partnership altogether?)

According to The New York Times, AT&T previously said no, given that it would overwhelm the already-crowded network. Up until now, the SlingPlayer for the iPhone app was only usable over Wi-Fi. (Although, if it does swamp the 3G network, I hope this isn't what pushes AT&T over the edge to start imposing extra charges for data usage.)

However, before you download it from iTunes, know that it doesn't work over 3G just yet given that it has to go through Apple's iTunes app revision store process, which is typically a week or two. But since this is likely to be a popular sell, I don't think it will be much of a problem or a wait.

At least I hope not.
