Sony Android 3.0 tablet will drop by end of summer

If there was one product announcement missing at Sony's CES 2011 press conference, surely it was a tablet. After all, who isn't developing one these days? Looks like that situation is being remedied.

If there was one product announcement missing at Sony's CES 2011 press conference, surely it was a tablet. After all, who isn't developing one these days? Looks like that situation is being remedied.

As reported by the The Nikkei via Bloomberg, Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer has revealed that Sony will release a tablet running on Android 3.0. That tablet is expected to launch by the end of summer and in the United States first.

Naturally, there are already conflicting reports citing that the Honeycomb slate would actually be shipped later in 2011. A holiday season release does seem like a bigger event (which would fit in with Sony's style), but perhaps Sony wants to hit up the back-to-school crowd with an end of summer release.

Unfortunately, there aren't any other details beyond the operating system at this point. I'll be curious to see if this product turns out to be an oversized Xperia Play (PlayStation Phone), just as some might say that the iPad is just a very big iPhone.
