Sony has announced that it will release the basic specifications of the E-mount interchangeable lens series - for free.

Lens and mount adapter manufactureres can start getting this information on April 1st. The E-mount lens series is compatible with the Alpha NEX-3NEX-5 and the NEX-VG10 Handycam camcorder.

Certain lens companies have "endorsed" Sony's charitable move, but no one has signed on to produce any glass for this design so far. However, Carl Zeiss is among those, and just yesterday the lens manufacturer announced its intention to start working on the Micro Four Thirds standard for Olympus and Panasonic cameras. Considering Carl Zeiss has been prevalent on Sony cameras in the past, we could very well be seeing some E-mount lenses from the German-based company this year.
