Sprint deal headed for EU okay?

BRUSSELS -- MCI Worldcom’s (Nasdaq:WCOM) proposed purchase of Sprint may be referred for European Commission regulatory approval despite initial reports to the contrary. “We're expecting notification by mid-November,” a Commission spokesman said Friday.

BRUSSELS -- MCI Worldcom’s (Nasdaq:WCOM) proposed purchase of Sprint may be referred for European Commission regulatory approval despite initial reports to the contrary. “We're expecting notification by mid-November,” a Commission spokesman said Friday. A Commission source said in early October that MCI Worldcom might not need to notify the Commission about the $115 billion deal for Sprint (NYSE:FON) because Sprint's sales in the EU were not seen meeting the thresholds set in the bloc's merger control law.
