Sun could do a U-turn on its decision to halt Solaris support for Intel chips after outraged users bombarded chat rooms with complaints. The decision to discontinue support for Intel-based PCs on the upcoming Solaris 9, and to stop free downloads of Solaris 8, was announced in January as a cost-cutting measure. But angry users launched a chat room campaign that resulted in a 'secret six' committee of users being appointed to meet with Sun executives. While Sun has yet to make a final decision, the company last week said it would consider reinstating Solaris support and downloads for the Intel architecture if users were willing to pay a fee for it.
